It is really late in the day to be posting about my weekend…but for some reason I just seem to be really far behind! I worked here at the station Saturday morning and then through much of the afternoon, so I didn’t really get to help on the farm that much this weekend. Or I thought I wouldn’t get to help much! I showed up Saturday night, just ahead of the rain and the planter was running full steam. I got to ride along and help fill it once before we finished planting this field at 11:30pm. The rain was coming which meant there was no time to stop. Another field of Alfalfa was being blown on at the same time, so once we were done in the planter - we jumped into the roller and rolled the alfalfa. That took FOREVER! And I can’t say I stayed awake the entire time, but we got inside at 5AM only becuase it started to rain. If the rain had held off we would have gotten to watch the sun rise from the tractor.
And I was shown just how true it is that the farm never sleeps, so neither did I. By the time I got to sleep at 5:30am, we were woke up at 9AM to pull a calf. An hour later we had a live calf and a greatful cow…but then chores called! AHHH, sleep PLEASE! I did sneak in a few hour nap Sunday afternoon but now I am just feeling so behind.
I now have a better understanding of how wide open the farming community runs this time of year! The planting window seems to becoming even more narrow with the rains we have been getting in the spring. So to all the farmers…be safe and plan a nice long vacation sometime soon - you will all need it! Or at least I will! ~erin
